Precious Metal Recycling: A Technical Explanation on Palladium Chloride Recovery

Palladium chloride is a reddish-brown crystalline powder that is deliquescent and easily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid. It is quite common in the industry, especially in the fields of catalysis and electroplating. It is an inorganic compound used to prepare special catalysts and molecular sieves.


Recovering palladium chloride involves several steps. Generally, we first need to collect the palladium-containing waste. This waste may come from industrial catalysts or electroplating wastewater. Therefore, it is essential to pre-treat these materials through filtration and precipitation to remove impurities and ensure the purity of the palladium.

The next step is crucial and requires advanced technology. We use chemical methods to extract palladium from the solution. Typically, we add reducing agents, such as formaldehyde or hydrogen, to reduce the palladium ions in the solution, causing them to precipitate as metallic palladium.

Having accomplished this, we obtain the precipitated metallic palladium, but the work is not yet complete. Further processing of these precipitates through smelting and refining methods is necessary to finally obtain high-purity palladium metal.
